Electricity theft poses a particular risk to businesses. They are among the first
to suffer when the power is out.
Business in South Africa have already taken a stand against crime. Organisations,
like Business Against Crime, play an important role in making South Africa safe
for all.
Every business and individual can and should act to help Operation Khanyisa:
- Ensure that all power supply points at business premises are legal,
safe and in good working condition (i.e. no illegal connections or tampered / bypassed
/ malfunctioning meters)
- Implement a policy to require of suppliers to be certified as legal
power users (Eskom is considering issuing such “legal power user” certifications
upon conducting on-site audits / verifications).
- People can take action to ensure that their own businesses are also
certified as legal power users.
- Inform and raise awareness among suppliers and staff regarding the
focus on legal power use, and issue a call to action to stop electricity theft.
- Encourage staff to check and ensure that all power supply points
at their homes are legal, safe and in good working condition.
- Join the movement and become part of Operation Khanyisa by:
- Becoming a supporter and advocate of the campaign
- Encouraging others to become part of this movement
- Joining up with specific campaign actions through e.g. volunteerism,
sponsorships and resources.
- Lobbying for organised industry bodies to become campaign partners,
spread the message, and mobilise for legal power use
- Raising this as a discussion topic in forums
- Empowering people and organisations with knowledge regarding the
dangers of electricity theft, its impact on South Africa, consequences, and the
importance of stopping this theft.
- Suggesting ideas to expand or enhance the campaign
