Electricity can be very dangerous when used incorrectly. Just because it is transmitted
through wires and plugs, does not mean it is safe. As soon as these wires are tampered
with, they become extremely dangerous.
It is important to remember:
- Power lines should never be touched, even if they appear to be “dead”.
- Lines that look as if they have been tampered with should always
be reported – these could explode if left unattended.
- A power line should never be cut – this could result in electrocution.
- Electrical substations and transformers are fenced or enclosed for
a reason – no member of the public should ever enter these areas without authorisation.
Illegal connections are extremely dangerous because they are usually made with incorrect
wiring. This wiring is often un-insulated and runs across floors or pathways. In
most instances, the earth leakage unit, which serves as protection against any accidental
contact with electricity, is bypassed. This poses an obvious danger to all, in particular
to children and animals that touch these unsafe wires can face serious injury or
death.
Also, people that make illegal connections and tamper with meters tend to ignore
safety precautions and leave users at permanent risk of electrocution. It is never
safe to have illegal connections, or tampered meters, in homes or businesses.
Remember, even small amounts of electricity can kill. So be smart, report illegal
connections. One call can save a life!
