No effort is ever too small. Those South Africans who support legal power use, and act against electricity theft, contribute to better living standards for themselves and a sustainable future for all.

What South Africans can do:

  1. Become legal electricity users and report those who are not
  2. Pay all electricity bills, as non-payment is also illegal and contributes to revenue loss
  3. Those who qualify for Free Basic Electricity (FBE), should ensure that they are registered to receive this service and collect their free tokens monthly
  4. Become energy efficient and save money (see chapter EFFICIENCY IS KEY)
  5. Influence co-workers, employers, friends, family and neighbours to become ambassadors for legal electricity use

What constitutes a criminal offence:

  1. Stealing vending machines that dispense pre-paid electricity vouchers and the reselling of these vouchers
  2. Tampering with meters
  3. Bypassing meters
  4. Making illegal connections to utilities’ networks
