Every person in South Africa is affected by the country’s economic infrastructure. Therefore, indirectly, everyone uses electricity. However, there are direct users who use electricity on a daily basis. Eskom categorises these in different customer categories, namely:

  1. Re-distributors (Municipalities that re-distribute to their end-customers)
  2. Industrial
  3. Mining
  4. Commercial
  5. Traction
  6. Residential
  7. Agricultural
  8. Prepayment

Eskom generates, transmits, distributes and retails electricity – this means they sell directly to businesses and the public, and also to municipalities, who then sell to the public.

In South Africa, the biggest electricity users are businesses, industries and commerce, followed by residential users.
